How to Choose a Contractor!

Choosing a contractor to perform work on your home can be a arduous experience. Finding someone you trust to perform the work the way you want, in the time frame you need, is not an easy task.

In this blog I will discuss a step by step process to ensure you end up with the right contractor who will perform the renovation of your dreams.

  1. Discuss goals and expectations for the project: You along with anyone else who has input in the decisions should discuss your goals for the outcome of the project including time frame and budget.
  2. Research blog sites and reviews on the products you may use: Have a good idea of what’s available and attainable in your market. Once you’ve read consumer’s opinions on a product, get ready to ask your proposed contractors for their opinions as well.
  3. Internet research on contractors: Use anything from Angie’s List to local family associations online for recommendations on licensed contractors in your area
  4. Telephone Interview: Call at least 5 contractor’s and conduct phone interviews. Pay close attention to their demeanor and willingness to answer questions. This will be a direct indication of how they will treat you when you have questions on a job site. Make sure they are licensed and insured. From the 5 you will choose three and call them back to set an appointment for an in-home estimate that should be free of charge.
  5. In house Interview: This is where you have to be prepared to explain the goals and expectations you have discussed. With all your questions written down, be prepared to take notes on information they offer or notes on their general performance during the estimate. How knowledgeable are they with the products you’ve chosen? How many jobs in their portfolio match yours? These are all key things to observe about your candidates.
  6. Discuss and assess the qualifications and general demeanor of your contractor candidates so that you make a great decision: By having a clear plan for your renovation, doing your due diligence, expressing these needs, and getting them in writing from a qualified service provider; you have set yourself up for success in this renovations process.

Capped Composite Railing

When building a deck there are many options to choose from. One can go with cedar or treated lumber; or what’s becoming extremely popular is capped composite decking.

Depending on your taste or your budget the capped composite decking can be an excellent look on your new deck. Here are a few reasons why capped composite might be right for you.

Railing

  • Extremely sturdy and durable.
  • It won’t rot, warp, or splinter.
  • Pairs aesthetically with composite decking.
  • Excellent 25 year fade and stain warranty.
  • So as you can see we prefer the capped composite deck for its overall performance and longevity. As an installer and owner of these decks, I give them my stamp of approval.

When Hiring a Contractor!

In this blog we will discuss further some points to consider when hiring a contractor.

When a contractor comes to the home there are many things to consider:

  • Do they have current license and insurace?
  • Do they have a good track record?
  • Do they offer visitation to job sites?
  • Do they remove all garbage from job?

1.Are they licensed and insured?

  • Ask for proof of their license and insurance when they come to your home for the estimate.
  • Ask to see a copy of their license.Be sure they are working legally in your municipality.
  • Confirm that they have workman’s compensation in case their workersare injured on your property.
  • Confirm that they have liability insurance in case they damage your property.Liability also covers you, your family, or your guests for injuries resulting from the construction process.

2.Make sure your contractor has a good track record:

  • Ask for referrals of customers they have worked for. Some referrals are willing to show you the work.
  • Check reviews on Angie’s List, Trex.com, or Google Pages.
  • Call consumer affairs.
  • Call the BBB (Better Business Bureau).

3.Ask if you can visit an open job site:

  • This is a great opportunity to see the dynamic of who works at your home.
  • Are the employees easily identifiable with uniforms?
  • Does it appear that the employees are conducting themselves in a safe manner?
  • Is the jobsite messy?
  • Do they look happy to be there?

4.Make sure the contractor is responsible for removing all the garbage:

  • Will the jobsite be cleaned at the end of each day?
  • Will the debris be carted away?
  • Will the contractor have a dumpster in your driveway or trailers it away daily?
  • Do they run magnets in the yard to pick up nails and other sharp metals?

We hope that you find this additional information to be helpful in your decision on hiring a contractor. Follow us on Facebook to keep getting helpful tips like these.
